Category B theory exam in Flanders: plan your preparation

Plan where the whole exam journey will happen

Booking a category B theory exam in Flanders starts with more than finding an available appointment. Consider where you intend to take the practical exam and which language helps you understand a question without guessing.

Flanders announces a change for 1 January 2027: candidates taking the practical exam there will also need to have passed theory in Flanders. Its page states there are no transitional measures. This is an announced change for that date, not a requirement already in force on 13 October 2026. Recheck the official page if your journey crosses the new year. Brussels already requires a Brussels theory pass for its practical exam.

Understand the weighted score

The Flemish exam has 50 questions and requires at least 41 points. An ordinary mistake costs one; a mistake about a third- or fourth-degree offence or the permitted maximum speed costs five. Two five-point errors leave 40/50, below the threshold.

Keep separate notes for rules you did not know and situations you misread. Repeatedly recognising familiar pictures is less useful than explaining why the alternatives are wrong.

Decide on language before exam day

The standard exam is in Dutch. Translated audio is available in French, German and English, following the Dutch reading. This differs from bringing your own interpreter. Ask the centre how to request the option and check its current additional cost.

Make a small vocabulary list for terms such as priority, lane and built-up area. Study languages on Mazlet do not book an audio option at an official centre.

Check documents and earlier attempts

Use the authority’s identity-document list. After two unsuccessful theory attempts, a certificate for twelve hours of theory at a recognised driving school is required for the third attempt.

Write down your document checklist, appointment procedure and travel plan before the evening preceding the exam. That leaves your final study session free for the rules you still find difficult.

Make the last practice session useful

Pick one weak topic, revisit the rule and answer different examples before attempting another mixed test. Review mistakes rather than measuring preparation only by the number of tests completed.

Start with the free Belgian theory test. Mazlet is independent of exam centres and provides original practice questions, not official exam questions or a promise of passing.
