Parking and stopping in Belgium: read the whole situation

Editorial illustration — Parking and stopping in Belgium: read the whole situation

An empty space is not automatically a legal parking place. Before stopping, check both the street layout and the signs governing that section of road.

Stopping is not simply a short stay

The legal distinction concerns the activity, not whether you leave the engine running. Time strictly needed for people to get in or out, or for loading and unloading, is different from waiting. Sitting in the car while someone shops does not turn parking into stopping. Hazard lights do not create an exemption.

Read signs and surroundings together

A parking prohibition and a stopping-and-parking prohibition are different instructions. Read supplementary panels for times, vehicle categories and the extent of the restriction. Then check for crossings, cycle tracks, entrances and other places where your vehicle could obstruct or conceal someone.

Do not copy the cars already there. They may be parked illegally, have a relevant permit, or have arrived under different conditions. A payment machine nearby does not authorise parking everywhere around it.

Use a blue-zone disc correctly

Unless signs specify otherwise, blue-zone parking normally requires a disc on working days from 09:00 to 18:00 and allows two hours. Set the pointer to the next half-hour after arrival: arriving at 10:10 means showing 10:30. Display it visibly. Do not reset it to extend the same stay without moving the vehicle.

Local signs can change the time limit or applicable hours. Check them before calculating when you must leave.

Practise with a decision checklist

Ask: am I waiting or actively boarding/loading? Is this location permitted? Does a sign impose another condition? Is a disc, payment or permit required? Could opening the door endanger a cyclist?

For an exam-style situation, explain which detail makes the answer change. Learning only the colour of a parking sign misses the context that determines the correct decision.
