Passed your Belgian theory exam: what happens next?

Passing theory is an important milestone, but it does not by itself authorise you to drive alone. Your next task is to choose a legal training route and obtain the documents that route requires.

Keep the result and record its expiry

The category B theory pass is generally valid for three years. Record the exact expiry date shown on your documents and keep the original paperwork safe. Do not confuse the validity of your theory result with the validity of a provisional licence: they are different clocks.

Create reminders well before expiry. Waiting until the final weeks leaves little room for lessons, appointment availability or an unsuccessful practical attempt.

Choose your training route

Contact your municipality and an approved driving school to discuss your options. Provisional licences with and without a guide have different conditions. Your age, previous training and selected region can affect what is available. A theory certificate is not a substitute for a valid provisional licence or the required supervision.

Before committing to a package, ask who can accompany you, when you may practise, what equipment the vehicle needs, and which documents you must carry. Have the school distinguish legal requirements from optional extra lessons.

Check regional practical-test conditions

Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia do not have an interchangeable training timetable. Minimum practice periods, risk-perception assessments and other preparation requirements must be checked against the regional route you choose. Brussels also links access to its practical exam to a Brussels theory pass.

If you intend to change region during training, confirm eligibility with the destination centre before booking. Do not rely on advice from a friend who obtained a licence under older rules.

Keep using the theory

During supervised practice, connect each rule to an observation: where visibility is blocked, why a crossing needs more space, or how signs change the road’s use. After a drive, choose one uncertain situation and revisit the relevant lesson. This turns a passed test into useful driving judgement instead of a certificate you forget about.
